Happy Memorial Day

On the last Monday in May the United States celebrates Memorial Day; this year it falls on May 27, 2013. Our small town has a celebration or memorial in the cemetery, therefore, there will be American flags placed on all the graves of service men or women. While I have never attended the celebration, my husband has never missed one. He always attended with his father, who served, his mom and brother. After my brother-n-law passed away in 2005, that left the others to attend the celebration. In 2008, my father-n-law also passed away, leaving my husband and mother-n-law alone.

According to About.com, “Many people confuse Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Memorial Day is a day for remembering and honoring military personnel who died in the service of their country, particularly those who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle. While those who died are also remembered on Veterans Day, Veterans Day is the day set aside to thank and honor ALL those who served honorably in the military - in wartime or peacetime.”

Year after year, they buy flowers and decorate each grave of the loved ones in the cemetery. Not just the serviceman/women; all loved ones, that way on Memorial Day, the graves look nice for the celebration of the persons who served our country.

If you have lost a loved one serving the U.S.A., this Memorial Day, I salute you.
