Can you think of a better way of learning some history ? There are several songs with a focus on historical events and as a matter of fact, some of them are very accurate and meaningful ! In this lens I am highlighting what I believe are the best 10 songs with a history theme.

1. Alexander the Great (1986)

Iron Maiden

Number 1 on my list one of the many Iron Maidensongs with a history theme. It was released in 1986 with the album Somewhere in Time. It follows the life of the Great Macedon King, highlighing all his great achievements until his unexpected death by fever in Babylon at the age of 33. Highly recommented song but you should really listen to it with the lyrics in hand so you can enjoy it to the full.

2. Wind of Change (1990)

Scorpions

One of the best songs ever written, this masterpiece by Scorpions refers to the changing world of the late 1980's which saw the fall of Communism and the end of the Cold war. It was written by Klaus Meinne after a visit in Moscow and it is one of the top-20 best selling singles in the world with over 14 million sales !

3. We Didn't Start the Fire (1989)

Billy Joel

According to Wikipedia, the lyrics of this Billy Joel song are made up from rapid-fire brief allusions to over a hundred headline events between March 1949 and 1989 for which he believes that his generation was not responsible:

We didn't start the fire
It was always burning
Since the world's been turning

Copied from MetroLyrics.com

This was one of the rare occasions were Billy Joel himself wrote the lyrics.
