Pretty Old Book: French Wit and Wisdom
I love everything about this book , except for the fact that all the French was translated into English. Translating Voltaire into the original French is tedious.
I bought French Wit and Wisdom for its cover and its content. The scan here is the dust jacket, but the actual hard cover of the book is identical, and mine is in perfect condition. It really is a little slip of a book with similar illustrations in black and white inside. There are ten chapters worth of quotes, each one corresponding to a different Frenchman or Frenchwoman.
My favorite chapter is that of the Three Women, Sand, De Stael, and De Valois.
French Wit and Wisdom is A Peter Pauper Press Book published in 1950 with illustrations by Fritz Kredel.
