The Best Fire Starters Ever

" How To" and why you might want to make homemade Fire Starters

Yard sale camdles from the weekend

Every spring I hit the garage sales and buy candles for next to nothing. Every yard sale has ugly and some really nice candles for sale. Since my sister and I burn candles while camping I buy all shapes and sizes and the ugly ones get melted to make fire starters.

My fire starters are made of all recycled material. We use them in the winter to help start our wood burning fireplace. Friends use them in their backyard bonfires and my sister and I use them while camping to start our campfires.

paper egg boxes

The first thing you need is the pressed paper egg boxes. Where I live most of the egg cartons are made of paper. Don't use the plastic ones because burning that is not good for our world.

All year I collect dryer lint form my dryer. I keep it in a bag just to keep it for my firestarters.  You fill each egg hole in the egg carton with a wad of dryer lint.

The next step is to melt the candle wax. Someone a long time ago gave me one of those candles that needed to be heated on it's burner so you can enjoy the scent.

I don't enjoy the sents. I think the smell is overpowering and obnoxious. So the only use that little gadget gets is when I make fire starters.

So break up those candles and melt that wax.

Once the wax is melted pour it over the dryer lint in the egg carton almost filling each section.

Once the wax cools your firestarters are done. I store them on a shelf and when its time to go camping they get packed with everything else.

To use the firestarters break the carton into 12 pieces. Don't and I repeat Do Not use the whole egg carton for one fire. Each egg carton equals 12 firestarters. We use two at the most to get a fire started.

They work like a charm and make fire starting so much easier than paper and kindling.

This information should also make you aware of just how bad that lint can be if not cleaned out of you dryer on a regular basis. It catches fire fast. I had a friend who had a house fire that started in the dryer.

If you try this (and I know a lot of people who do) you will like the end result.

Happy camping, bonfires, and warm winters to all!
