Thre are many ways to hike to the summit of Dorr Mountain, several trails are stone steps that lead most of the way up the mountain, and this includes the Homans trail, but of all the ways up Dorr, none is more scenic than the Homans Trail, in my opinion.
To locate the Homans trail, you first have to locate the Jesup trail. Drive onto the One Way section of the Park Loop road, drive until you come to the first paved road that connects to the one way section, it will be on the left. Once you come to that paved road, slow down and pull over onto the right hand side of the roadway, the jesup trail will be right there in front of you.
The trail winds its way through a meadow.
As you walk along you can see Dorr Mountain off to the right.
You will soon come to a four way intersection, take the wooded boardwalk which will lead you through an amazing hike through wetlands. The boarded pathway is clearly marked "Jesup Path.
As you walk along, be on the lookout for different birds and other wildlife. There are usually a number of photographers in here taking photos. You will also have several places along the way to set on wooden benches.
The wooden walkway ends at a four way intersection. To reach the wild gardens of Acadia or visit the wildlife Center, either go straight or go left. To reach the Homans trail, turn right, and about three car lengths you will see a trail marker.
This trail was abandoned in the early 50's and just recently reopened by the National Park Service.
Here you have to duck and pass under huge sections of granite.
At one point, just before the top, the trail passes through a narrow gap in the granite, which makes for amazing photo.
The Homans trail comes to an end when it meets up with the Dorr Mountain Emery trail, which is the most popular hike up dorr Mountain, in part because it is the easiest of the trails to locate. I would place Dorr Mountain on my must climb list, ahead of the more popular Cadillac Mountain hike. Yes, the steps seem endless, but the views combined with the unique granite sections you have to pass between, around, and under make Dorr a must do.
Once you reach the Emery trail, you are about two thirds of the way to the summit.
