Summer in Barcelona: Festivals and events you shouldn't miss
Depending from your age and interest, you can find your best choice among these:
Sónar
This International festival of Advanced Music and Multimedia Art lasts for three days during which you can enjoy electronic music, urban art, many exhibitions and conferences and other things related to music and contemporary art. While Sonar by Day offers sound labs, conferences and exhibitions of multimedia art, Sonar by Night is characterized by crowds and many concerts of famous local and international DJs. This fest offers something for everybody - Sonar Park, Sonar Pub, Sonar Club and Sonar Kids. Some well-known artist from all around the world expected to participate in this fest in 2014 are Massive Attack, Plastikman and Richie Hawtin, James Holden, Four Tet, I am Legion and Woodkid.
Sant Joan
As the feast of St John is getting nearer, there seems to be a change in people’s mood as everyone is a lot happier and eager to celebrate. This event or holiday is celebrated all over Barcelona and is really interesting if you dare to take part in it. Namely, during the night of the 23rd of June, the streets of Barcelona are filled with people who illuminate the night with firecrackers. As the night progresses, there will be more and more people who light bonfires especially along the coastline of Barcelona - and they stay out until dawn. People drink Cava and eat sweet pastry with candied fruit on top. Don’t be afraid to participate and let that inner child in you emerge at least for the night.
Gran Trobada d’Havaneres
On the beach called Barceloneta, in the district with the same name, old Catalan tradition takes its toll. To be more precise, in Passeig Joan de Borbó on the last Saturday in June, people dress in stripes as mariners, which go along with the sound of the accordion and guitar, performed in different shows and musicals, where they sing about their memories and love towards Cuba that once was a Spanish colony. As during Sant Joan, during this event, people play around with fireworks and drink cremat - a drink with a lot of rum in it.
Festival del Grec
Festival del Grec lasts from the ending of July, up to the middle of August. It got its name after the Teatre Grec or The Greek Theater, inspired by Greek architecture. There are a lot of musical, theater and dance shows, performed by artists from all over the city and the world. This cultural festival is something you don’t want to miss if you are spending your summer in Barcelona.
Sala Montjuïc outdoor film festival
During July, you will get an opportunity to enjoy classic, but also some contemporary works of art in the world of cinematography. There will be shows for several times during the week on the Castell de Montjuïc. Rent a Vespa and come to this outdoor cinema with your other half to spend an amazing night. It is somewhat a tradition to bring a picnic basket and stay until the early morning hours, when a jazz band starts their performance. Magical!
